What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring silicate minerals made up of fine, durable fibers that are highly resistant to heat, fire, and chemical damage. These properties made asbestos an extremely popular building material throughout much of the 20th century.

By the 1970s, mounting scientific evidence linked asbestos exposure to serious diseases including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) subsequently introduced strict regulations governing the use, handling, and disposal of asbestos-containing materials.

What Happens When Asbestos Fibers Are Inhaled

Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, lodge in the lower regions of the lungs and cannot be expelled by the body. Over time, this causes:

  • Asbestosis — progressive scarring of lung tissue that reduces respiratory function
  • Lung cancer — with significantly elevated risk for those with sustained exposure
  • Pleural mesothelioma — a cancer of the lining of the lungs and chest cavity
  • Pleural effusions and other chest cavity complications

Because these diseases typically develop 20–50 years after initial exposure, many people don’t realize the risk until it’s too late. Testing before renovation or demolition is not just smart; it may be legally required.

Our Asbestos Testing Process

Our certified asbestos consultants conduct a thorough visual inspection and collect bulk material samples from suspected asbestos-containing areas.

A Licensed Asbestos Consultant inspects the property and identifies suspected asbestos-containing materials.

02 Bulk Sample Collection

Samples are collected and submitted to an NVLAP-accredited laboratory for independent analysis.

03 Your Written Report

You receive a comprehensive report with findings, photos, laboratory results, and recommendations for next steps.

Important Note on Asbestos Removal

Nevada Mold Testing conducts inspections and testing only. If asbestos is confirmed, removal must be performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor approved by the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Nevada OSHA). We’re happy to explain this process and what to expect.
